Things to Do on a Rainy Day in the Smokies
Sightseeing and touring the Smoky Mountains is a MUST if you’re visiting East Tennessee or nearby areas. But what is there to do when the weather isn’t cooperating? While you might have to brave a few wet steps from parking, here are our favorite things to do on a rainy day.
Get an awesome panoramic view of Gatlinburg at the top of the Space Needle. Take an elevator to the observation tower 407 feet high and see up close with free view finders. At the base of the Space Needle is Arcadia, a 25,000 square foot video game arcade and theater. Here, you’ll find all the classic games like Pac-Man, Ski Ball, and a variety of crane machines as well as Basketball, Air Hockey, and first-person shooter games. Spend the day racking up tickets on your arcade charge card and turn them in for prizes from the vast selection available in the back. All that gaming most likely worked up an appetite and luckily, there’s an onsite pizza place! Slice Pizza Bakery offers New York-style pizza with an authentic Italian recipe. One pizza is big enough to feed the whole family or order by the slice with a beer or cider to accompany it.
Not too far down the road is Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies and you can’t miss this place. Voted Best U.S. Aquarium by USA Today, Ripley’s has an amazing display of fish, penguins, and even mermaids! You can explore the Shark Lagoon in a Glass Bottom Boat, touch a sting ray or jellyfish at select exhibits, and let the kids run wild in the new 4-story playground. Mermaid Dives occur throughout June and July and you can see them swimming down to say hello. With over 350 individual species onsite, there are thousands of sea creatures making more fish in the aquarium than there are people living in all of Gatlinburg!
Our Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge cabins offer plenty to do as well. Select luxury cabins feature hot tubs, game rooms, and home theaters. There’s no need to check the weather for your vacation, it’ll be the trip of a lifetime no matter what!
